Goethe Examination Centre

Learn German while having fun – and get your progress certified! At the German School of Geneva (DSG), children and teenagers aged between 4 and 19 discover the German language in a playful and creative way: Games, songs, theatre and varied activities make each course lively, motivating and suitable for the respective language level. The DSG is the only Goethe Examination Centre for young people in the region. Several times a year, participants can take official exams and obtain an internationally recognised language certificate – a real added value.

Goethe-Certificate A1: Fit in Deutsch 1

By successfully passing the A1 exam, participants demonstrate that they …

  • can communicate in a simple way, introduce themselves and answer basic questions about themselves – using body language for support if necessary;
  • can use familiar and frequently used expressions and simple sentences, for example on topics such as family, shopping, work, school or living;
  • be able to understand short, simple everyday conversations, as long as they are being spoken slowly and clearly.

Goethe-Certificate A2: Fit in Deutsch

By successfully passing the A2 exam, participants demonstrate that they …

  • can understand and use common expressions and sentences frequently encountered in everyday situations;
  • can communicate in simple, routine situations especially on familiar topics such as origin, education, environment or everyday needs;
  • be able to extract key information from short, simply formulated texts such as newspaper articles, adverts or notices.

Goethe-Certificate B1

The Goethe-Certificate B1 consists of four modules: listening, reading, writing and speaking. These can be taken and certified individually or combined – the modular structure offers maximum flexibility.

By successfully passing the B1 exam, participants demonstrate that they …

  • can understand the main content when speaking in clear basic language about familiar topics such as work, school or leisure;
  • can express themselves in simple, coherent sentences about personal interests, experiences, dreams and goals and give simple reasons and explanations;
  • understand uncomplicated factual texts on familiar topics and their own area of interest or specialization.

The Goethe-Certificate B1 is the official language certificate for obtaining a settlement permit and naturalisation.

Goethe-Certificate B2

The Goethe Certificate B2 consists of four modules: listening, reading, writing and speaking. These can be taken and certified individually or combined – the modular structure offers maximum flexibility.

By successfully passing the B2 exam, participants demonstrate that they …

  • understand the main messages of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics and are able to follow specialised discussions in their field of expertise;
  • are able to communicate spontaneously and fluently so that a normal conversation with German speakers is possible without much effort;
  • are able to express themselves clearly and in a structured manner on a wide range of topics, explain their own positions on current issues and present the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

The Goethe Certificate B2 is recognised in the visa procedure for seeking a traineeship and is accepted by some universities in Germany as proof of language proficiency.
